This week, AMD introduced the Ryzen 5 8400F and Ryzen 7 8700F, new Zen 4 budget CPUs without integrated graphics. As part of the Ryzen 8000 series, the 8400F also lacks Ryzen AI support found in higher-end models. The Ryzen 5 8400F features 6 cores and 12 threads, a base clock of 4.2GHz, a boost clock of 4.7GHz, and a 65-watt TDP, retailing for $169 to $189 USD. Here are some initial benchmarks for the Ryzen 5 8400F, including 230+ tests under Linux, CPU power consumption monitoring, and a comparison with Intel’s Core i5 14400F, priced just under $200.

The AMD Ryzen 5 8400F offers six Zen 4 cores with SMT, providing 12 threads, and can boost up to 4.7GHz from a base clock of 4.2GHz. It includes a 6MB L2 cache and a 16MB L3 cache, with a 65-watt TDP. As an -F SKU, it lacks integrated graphics and Ryzen AI NPU but retains other Zen 4 features like AVX-512 and Precision Boost 2. The Ryzen 5 8400F is listed at $189, with prices ranging from $169 to $200 at various retailers.

AMD’s press materials compare the Ryzen 5 8400F to the Core i5 13400F, priced around $185. However, I opted to purchase the Core i5 14400F for $199, given its similar price and being Intel’s latest generation. Both the i5-13400F and i5-14400F are 10-core CPUs with 6 P-cores and 4 E-cores, offering 16 threads. The P-cores on both have a base frequency of 2.5GHz, with the i5-13400F boosting up to 4.6GHz and the i5-14400F up to 4.7GHz. The E-cores on the i5-13400F boost to 3.3GHz compared to 3.5GHz on the i5-14400F. Both CPUs have a 9.5MB L2 cache and a 20MB L3 cache, providing a slight core/thread advantage over the Ryzen 5 8400F while costing similarly and offering comparable boost frequencies.

In this preliminary comparison, I benchmarked the Ryzen 5 8400F and Core i5 14400F over 24+ hours with more than 270 tests. A broader comparison with more desktop processors will follow on Phoronix as I re-test all Intel and AMD processors on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS with the latest kernel, providing fresh data as always.

For the Ryzen 5 8400F vs. Core i5 14400F comparison, I used 2 x 16GB GSKILL DDR5-6000 memory, a 2TB WD_BLACK SN850X NVMe SSD, and Radeon RX 7900 GRE graphics, with the same Ubuntu 24.04 LTS software stack for both. CPU power consumption was monitored using the PowerCap/RAPL interfaces during the benchmarks for detailed per-benchmark power usage.
