Say Cheese, AI! WhatsApp is Testing an AI-Generated Profile Picture Feature

TL;DR: WhatsApp’s latest Android beta is testing AI-generated profile pictures. Users will soon be able to create custom profile pictures by simply describing the desired image.

Major tech companies are rapidly integrating generative AI into various aspects of our lives. We have AI that can write, handle calls, plan trips, and now, Meta aims to revolutionize how we create profile pictures.

The feature was discovered in WhatsApp’s latest beta for Android (version 2.24.11.17) by WABetaInfo. Instead of selecting or editing a selfie, users can describe the image they want, and the AI will generate a custom profile picture based on that description.

While the idea of an AI-generated profile picture might seem strange—since profile pictures typically help people recognize you—it appears this feature will function like standard AI image generators. Users can expect a variety of outputs, from animated characters to imaginative landscapes, rather than enhancements of existing photos.

This feature might appeal to privacy-conscious users, but it also raises the question of whether our WhatsApp contacts list will soon be filled with AI-generated images that look like they belong in a Pixar movie.

Given that this feature is already in the Android beta, it’s likely that all WhatsApp users, including those on iOS, will have access to it soon.
