Apple CEO Highlights Ongoing Investment in AI Systems
The global race in artificial intelligence (AI) is intensifying as tech giants continue to incorporate advanced language models to enhance user experiences. While companies like Microsoft have been vocal about their generative AI initiatives, Apple has remained more reserved. However, Apple’s iPhones have been leveraging AI technology well before the debut of ChatGPT in 2022.
In February, Apple CEO Tim Cook confirmed that the Cupertino-based company is indeed investing in generative AI. Despite this acknowledgment, some argue that Apple appears to be trailing in the AI race compared to its competitors.
During Apple’s earnings call, Cook stated, “We believe in the transformative power and promise of AI, and we believe we have advantages that will differentiate us in this new era, including Apple’s unique combination of seamless hardware, software, and services integration.”
More details on AI features in Apple’s products are expected to be revealed with new software updates on June 10. Nonetheless, current iPhones already feature AI-powered functionalities.
For instance, last year’s iOS 17 introduced a feature called Personal Voice, which allows users to digitally clone their voice. According to a ZDNet report, this feature helps individuals with speech loss to create a personalized voice for easier communication.
To create a digital clone of their voice, users are prompted to read 150 phrases aloud, which the iPhone then analyzes using AI to generate a new voice version. For communication, users can utilize the iPhone’s type-to-speak tools to have their text read out loud in FaceTime and third-party apps.
